Possible Books To Read
The Lord’s Prayer: working on memorizing the Greek and looking at the ways it has been interpreted by Augustine, Aquinas, and beyond the Christian tradition in Judaism, Islam, and literary interpretations. While it often makes mistakes, ChatGPT is a starting place.
Horse by Geraldine Brooks: Started yesterday. Slow at the moment, but I have high hopes.
Secrets by the Sea by Stefanie Barnfather: I was asked to read an ARC and post a review later.
How To Pray by Pete Greig: Connected to my interest in the Lord’s Prayer. Greig builds on the 24 hour prayer movement of Count Zinzendorf starting in 1727. My friend, the Rev Dr Bill Allen told me, “prayer is a response to the call of God in our lives.”
Augustine’s Confessions: This has been on my list for some time. Related is Robin Lane Fox’s biography of Augustine. A giant of Church history I ought to know more about.
Audition by Pip Adam: Three giants are immobilized in a single room in a spaceship. They must talk to keep the ship moving; when they stop talking they grow.
Autocorrect by Etgar Keret. I have enjoyed Keret’s work on This American Life and at least two of his books. This Israeli writer has a very earthy sense of humor.
Memoirs of a Polar Bear by Yoko Tawada. A dreamy story of three generations of a polar bear family by this German language Japanese writer often mentioned for the Nobel prize.
Fox by Joyce Carol Oates. One of the few giants of literature who was publishing in the 1960s is still publishing. Francis Fox is a charming teacher at an exclusive New Jersey boarding school. When Fox’s car is found in a pond and pieces of someone’s body are found in the nearby woods, police begin to unravel Fox’s disturbing past. Coming 17 June.
