Book Review of the Day: Art & Max by David Wiesner

Arthur is a lizard painting in the desert when his friend Max comes. Max thinks he would like to try painting and asks Arthur for a suggested subject. Hijinks ensue.

That is pretty much the story. But this is a children’s picture book with most of the story being told in pictures rather than words. Wiesner’s book is really a lot of fun. And, as can be expected, the art is delightful as well.

I have read a few art books in the last year or two like Blake Gopnick’s biography of Andy Warhol or Mary Gabriel’s story about five twentieth century female painters Ninth Street Women. I enjoy those books, but it is good to spend some time looking at a book where the images are more important than the words sometimes.
