Parquetry
I read in Wikipedia that, in the late 17th century, one of the first wooden parquet floors was installed in the Versailles palace to replace the high maintenance marble. The word in French means small compartment and is usually a geometric mosaic of wood pieces used in flooring. The article makes no mention of Islamic art; perhaps the two most important aspects of Islamic art are calligraphy and non-representational geometric patterns.
The text comes from Ulysses p. 242:
sweet big bitter ripe pomellated apples
and chips of strawberries
and sieves of gooseberries,
pulpy and pelurious,
and strawberries fit for princes
and raspberries from their canes.
The word pelurious is a word that James Joyce created. The root pelure comes from Anglo-Norman and means pelt, fur or animal skin. So, the word pelurious is a synonym for hairy. It is unrelated to the (rather rare) word purlieu which means piece of land on the edge of a forest.
