Detroit Zoo Penguinarium
If you happen to be in Royal Oak, Michigan, then you should seriously consider a visit to the Detroit Zoo. In particular, you should plan on visiting the Polk Penguin Conservation Center; the old facility was called the penguinarium. You must admit that the word penguinarium sounds funny.
According to the text on the zoo website, the exhibit was inspired by Ernest Shackleton’s trip to the Drake Passage. (Note: Shackleton’s mission was a failure, his mission was considered heroic because he made sure that he brought every member of his crew to safety.) You can see the birds above, below, and in front of you in a 25 foot deep aquatic area.
