Staircase

Some days, like today, I feel like completion rather than perfection. Still, if I had to name one thing I like about the image I would say it was my grain on the wooden steps. I was going to give up, but a word of encouragement from Andrea @thecumbriancrafter encouraged me to put in the time.

Here were are close to sea level — it is a 2.2 mile walk to perhaps the closest spot on the bay. So, with the ground so flat there are not a lot of stairs to photograph.

Currently reading three things at the same time:

James Joyce’s Ulysses as part of the Ulysses in 80 days projects.

Stephen King’s story collection Everything’s Eventual, one story per day. Today was a Dark Tower story. For about the last 18 months I have been reading one, and, less often two, short stories per day. I have worked my way through quite a few collections.

Wallace Stegner’s Crossing To Safety, a novel about the friendship of two couples over a forty year period.

Recent Watching:

The Souvenir, a 2019 picture written and directed by Joanna Hogg. There are two main plots: a young woman’s experiences in film school in the early 80’s (with some pretty condescending teachers, IMHO) and a first serious love affair that ends up going horribly wrong. (Habitual use of opiods by the man in the relationship.) Still this is a picture very much worth watching. It captures the way love and romance can take over a young person’s life. Plato, in the Symposium, recognized that EROS (the god of love) was a force that could drive a person well beyond the bounds of rationality and away from his goal, the pursuit of wisdom (SOPHIA) the most beautiful thing of all.

What about you? What have you been doing in the last day or two? Let me know in the comments.

Hope everyone is well today.
