Junk Journal Week 28
Books:
Falconer was a late career triumph for John Cheever. He taught inmates at the Sing Sing prison for two years, but it took quite a bit of effort to make that experience something that is a good novel. This is a good book.
I have followed Etgar Keret’s work for many years. Autocorrect is a story collection and many of the stories are flash fiction (less than three pages) with a single epiphany. Since I do not like to read more than one or two stories a day, it took me some time to finish the book. Earthy humor and some explore a future where technology has gone wrong.
Burgess’ Flashes of Brilliance is a history of photography from its earliest days in the 1840s to the early 20th century. Explosions and dangerous chemicals, hot air balloons, miniature photographs, x-rays, underwater photography, photo manipulation.
Screens:
Melancholia. I feel like you either appreciate Lars von Trier or you do not. I do.
The Changeover. A 2019 film adaptation of a 1980s YA novel about the supernatural and witches and such. Psychological horror or drama.
Non Fiction. I love Olivier Assayas. Very talky and intellectual with a feel of Eric Rohmer. Books and publishing are a bit part of the plot.
Dolemite Is My Name. A late career triumph for Eddie Murphy. If you do not know the name Rudy Ray Moore you should.
What about you? What books or movies have you spent time with in the past week?
