Distortion

Under the encouragement of a few of you -- THANK YOU! -- , I decided to work some more on yesterday’s mint leaf. I made a black and white print of the image and practiced by tracing the outline several times using pencil, gel pen, fine marker, sharpie, and tombow marker. Then I cut it up and pasted it in different order to an index card. I suppose that qualifies as distortion.

The text comes from Ulysses p. 256. I do not always know what is going on in the section I read, but in this section, apparently someone has turned a dog’s barking into a song or poem. An ENGLYN is a traditional short Welsh poem with rigid rules about meter and rhyme.

The metrical system of the canine original,

which recalls the intricate alliterative

and isosyllabic rules of the Welsh englyn,

is infinitely more complicated

but we believe our readers will agree

that the spirit has been well caught.
