Junk Journal Week 12

Every Sunday, I take stock of my weekly media consumption and share a visual presentation and a few thoughts with the handful of friends who follow my work online.

Let's start with movies and television. I did not list it here, but Round of Applause is a surreal family dramedy from Turkey available on Netflix. Truly extraordinary and recommended.

Mission: Impossible is fun, although it is probably not as good as Ghost Protocol and the movies that follow.

Dick Johnson Is Dead is a documentary about a daughter and her dying father. I think this is the only death focused picture I have ever seen that made me laugh. Multiple times. Netflix.

Beatles Hippies and Hells Angels is a documentary about the media company Apple Corps in its early years. Maybe not the best documentary ever, partly because there are no interviews with any of the Beatles. But at 52 minutes I did not regret the time. Prime.

Fremont is the story of an Afghan translator now working at a fortune cookie factory in Fremont, California. Touching. Mubi.

Finding Nemo is always worth watching. Disney plus.

Now books.

Notice I went a week without buying any books.

Ours is a nearly 600 page prose poem about freedom and slavery. Hardcover.

Old Head combines a story of a minor NBA basketball player with Dracula and 80s horror movie tropes. Kindle comic.

Gallatin Canyon is a collection of stories mostly set in the mountain west. It has been years since I read Thomas McGuane. I enjoy his work. Kindle.

Jazz is a meandering book with multiple characters, perspectives, and locations. I admit I did not always understand what was going on. I read the book for the language. Morrison's metaphors are sublime. Library hardcover and kindle.

Thanks so much for following my work here.

What have you read and watched in the last week?

Please share your experiences in the comments.
