Junk Journal Week 11

I continue the 100 days of creativity today with an apple and a bookworm.

As far as book buying, I bought one hardcover (Ours -- currently reading), one kindle ebook (Bush -- a serious biography of America's 43rd president), and two kindle comic books (SexCastle and Rock Candy Mountain -- both by Kyle Starks).

I read two short story collections; both are a collection of linked stories set in the same place. The Oz book is about a group of unhappy people who live in a small village in Israel. The Baxter book has five stories about virtues (bravery, loyalty, chastity, charity, and forbearance), five stories about vices (lust, sloth, avarice, glutton, and vanity) as well as a coda story; all are set in Minnesota. I enjoyed Charles Baxter's book more than Amos Oz's book, but I found both to be well written and engaging.

This week I decided to include my movie watching but not my television watching to keep things manageable. I have watched everything on my television in the last few years, so the line between TV and movies is a thin one.

Fallen Leaves is a South Korean psychological crime thriller that is something of a twisted love story. I saw it on the Mubi service which I recommend.

The Man Who Fell To Earth is a movie about a space alien (David Bowie) on a mission from another planet to bring water home. Long and weird. If you are in the right frame of mind it is a great movie playing on the Criterion Channel.

Fireworks is a 1997 Japanese crime thriller. The movie has long and occasionally violent scenes, but it also has long scenes of the main character -- a policeman -- spending time with his wife who has terminal leukemia. So there are some huge tone shifts in the picture. It is currently streaming on Mubi.

Ice Age: the meltdown is a fun animated movie streaming on Disney plus. My wife and daughter watched with me.
