British director Andrea Arnold won the Cannes Jury prize for the intense and invigorating Fish Tank, about a a fifteen-year-old girl, Mia (electrifying newcomer Katie Jarvis), who lives with her moth and sister in the housing projects of Essex. Mia's adolescent conflicts and emerging sexuality reach a boiling point when her mother's new boyfriend (a lethally attractive Michael Fassbender) enters the picture. via the Criterion Channel. 5 April.

- Footlight Parade. Directed by Lloyd Bacon. 1933. United States. Starring James Cagney, Joan Blondell, Ruby Keeler. Footlight Parade is shher cinematic joy. In this depression-era romp, a timid stenographer (Ruby Keeler) removes her glasses and -- wow! -- she's a star. A gee-whiz tenor (Dick Powell) asserts his independence. Plucky chorines tap, greedy hangers-on get their comeuppance, and an indefatigable producer/dancer (james Cagney) and his girl Friday (joan Blondell) work showbiz miracles to stage live prologues for talkie houses to keep their company afloat during hard times. "Honeymoon Hotel," "By a Waterfall," and "Shangra Lil" are the shows, directed by Busby Berkley and filled with imagination-beinding sets, startling camera angles, kaleidoscopic pageantry, and a twenty-thousand-gallon-per-minute waterfall.
