Title: A Child Figures Out Humor

Materials: gel pen, colored pencils, red marker, ball point pen

Prompt: Bubble

I was listening to the newest episode of This American Life on the radio today. Episode one started me thinking about how children figure out humor. Here is the summary of that episode:

First Contact: In this past year we’ve witnessed a revolution in A.I. – since the public rollout of ChatGPT.  Our Senior Editor David Kestenbaum thinks that even though there’s been a ton of coverage, there’s one thing people haven’t talked much about: have these machines gotten to the point that they’re starting to have something like human intelligence? Where they actually understand language and concepts, and can reason. He talks with scientists at Microsoft who’ve been trying to figure that out.

When he was much younger, my son was proud one day to have figured how what makes things funny. As he said first comes the joke, then comes the ha ha ha. Then he spent several minutes coming up to his relatives and saying joke and then laughing.

The index card has two types of bubbles: speech bubbles and ball point pen bubbles.
