Recent Reading: The Star Side of Bird Hill

Naomi Jackson’s novel is a story about reverse migration from Brooklyn to Barbados. Dionne (16) and her sister (10) find themselves living with their very religious grandmother Hyacinth (63). The highlight of the book is the well written description of the small community in Barbados that the girls are attempting to integrate into.

This novel is my pick for the upcoming Around the Book Club the first Thursday in March at my public library where the theme is Caribbean Islands.

Have you ever visited Barbados or another Caribbean Island? Or have you read a book set there?

What was the last book you read where the quality of the sentences was more memorable than the plot?
