O’Brien’s book tells everything you could possibly want to know about Pete Rose and more.
For example:
- An estimated 66 million people watched game six of the 1975 World Series between the Cincinnati Reds and the Boston Red Sox.
- Rose holds the major league total hit record and he was 44 years old when passed Ty Cobb’s record.
- Rose crashed into catcher Ray Fosse in the 1970 All Star Game, fracturing his shoulder and greatly shortening Fosse’s career to help win what was, essentially, an exhibition game.
- John Dowd — who later represented President Trump in the Mueller investigation — documented Rose’s gambling in 1985, 1986, and 1987. The report presented overwhelming evidence of Rose’s gambling and went on for 225 pages with an additional 3000 pages of exhibits.
- The recent case of current Los Angeles Dodgers baseball star Shohei Otani’s translator, Ippei Mizuhara, who is alleged to have embezzled $16 million in order to finance his gambling addiction suggests that sports gambling remains a problem.
