Scorsese's It's Not Just You, Murray!

Last night, for the first time, I watched It's Not Just You, Murray!. I watched it on my television via the Criterion Channel app. The movie was a movie Scorsese made as a student at NYU.

The Criterion Channel provides the following summary:

Made while Martin Scorsese was studying at NYU, this inventive, award-winning student film pays tongue-in-cheek homage to the classic gangster movie via a portrait of a high-rolling mobster looking back on his life.

I have seen a lot of student made short movies over the years, but I have to say this is one of the better ones. It has a great sense of humor and some quick editing that obviously took a lot of work. In addition, the film features the director's mother, Catherine Scorsese, in a small role. She later became the cook on the set for her son's movies and played small roles in a few of his movies, most notably as Tommy's mother in the movie Goodfellas.

Scorsese's final scene in his movie also features an homage to the final scene in Fellini's 8 1/2 shown below. Here's a review of the Fellini movie if you happen to be unfamiliar with it.
