ItalianAmerica
Last night, I watched Martin Scorsese's movie ItalianAmerica. This is a charming movie about one Sicilian-American couple -- Martin's parents, Charlie and Catherine Scorsese -- and their thoughts on the immigrant experience, living and growing up on the lower East side of New York City, and food. In the movie, Catherine Scorsese shows how she makes meatballs at the start of the movie. And then, during the credits, we get to see her recipe on the screen.
Catherine Scorsese later did the cooking for the cast and crew on the set of her son's movies. In 1991, she appeared on television to show David Letterman how she makes her pizza.
The Criterion Channel also recorded a 48 minute film interview with the director about his early life and career. Among other things, I learned that he grew up six blocks away from NYU and its film school but felt like it was a completely different world. The building where Scorsese grew up and where his parents lived for many years still stands. Here is a sample real estate listing of an apartment similar to the one the Scorsese's lived in that includes some pictures of how different the inside looks now.
