Cozy Storytime: Opposites by Richard Wilbur & Leonard Baskin
Yesterday, Friday, my Bluetooth microphone stopped working after the battery would no longer hold a charge so I did not manage to post a video. But I did post one today. This is my first poetry book.
Today’s cozy read‑aloud is Opposites — Richard Wilbur’s playful, poetic exploration of contrast, paired with Leonard Baskin’s bold, expressive illustrations. With its rhythmic language and striking visual pairings, this book invites children to reflect on how opposites help us understand the world.
Before recording, I spent a few minutes making an index‑card art project inspired by Baskin’s dramatic lines and imaginative contrasts. This small ritual helps me slow down, notice the visual language of the story, and enter the illustrator’s world with intention.
This book is wonderful for:
• Social‑emotional learning — perspective, flexibility, noticing differences
• Early literacy — vocabulary, comparison, prediction
• Visual literacy — contrast, scale, expressive line
• Classroom/library read‑alouds — concept exploration, descriptive language
• Cozy storytime moments — calm, curiosity, gentle humor
🎥 Watch the full cozy read‑aloud and enjoy this warm, reflective story.
