Recent Reading: Mondrian
Mondrian’s line here about abstract painting being a deep involvement with reality is about as close as the artist ever came to a statement about why he did what he did. Weber’s book is epic (600+ pages) and covers Theosophy, Calvinism, two world wars, time in Holland, France, and New York, among other topics. Mondrian led what could safely described as an ascetic life but he also loved jazz, Louis Armstrong’s solos, boogie woogie, and dancing. He remains one of the giants of non-representational painting.
