Today's Media (watching)

Wanda. Directed by Barbara Loden. 1970. United States. Via the Criterion Channel app.

Some thoughts on the picture:

  • If a director makes only one picture, but it is truly remarkable, the proper response, according to Steven Soderbergh, is gratitude.
  • The picture has very little dialogue, no soundtrack, and very little music.
  • The picture decidedly deglamorizes the crime story -- the opposite of the usual tendency in Hollywood. And it shows us a woman caught up in crime, yet, the reason why she does the things she does remains a mystery by the time the credits roll.
  • If you are looking for more unique, less well-known pictures that are also excellent, then I recommend: Chameleon Street directed by Wendell B. Harris (1989) and George Washington directed by David Gordon Green (2000).
