Stuff I've Been Watching July 2020

Continuing in the days of coronavirus, I have done plenty of streaming this month. I guess that is one advantage of this pandemic. As can be seen, I did get on a Scorsese kick in July. I have seen many of his movies before; this time I think I especially appreciated the humor.

  1. Goodfellas. Directed by Martin Scorsese. 1990. United States. Starring Ray Liotta, Joe Pesci, Robert DeNiro, Lorraine Bracco, Paul Sorvino. Purcahsed from amazon and watched via the amazon app. With Michal. 3 July.
  2. What’s a Nice Girl Like You Doing in a Place Like This? Directed by Martin Scorsese. 1963. United States. This giddily experimental student film by Martin Scorsese employs a jumble of freewheeling optical effects as it tells the surreal story of a man who becomes increasingly obsessed with a picture hanging on his wall. Via the Criterion Channel. With Michal. 3 July.
  3. Taxi Driver. Directed by Martin Scorsese. 1976. United States. Via the Netflix app. 4 July and 12 July. With Michal.
  4. Get Me Roger Stone. 2017. United States. Examine the rise, fall, and rebirth of political operative Roger Stone, who’s been an influential member of team Trump for decades. Via the Netflix app. 9 July.
  5. The Deuce. Season 2. HBO Max. 10 July.
  6. Italianamerican. Directed by Martin Scorsese. 1974. United States. Starring Catherine Scorsese, Charles Scorsese. In one of his most personal works, Martin Scorsese sits down with his parents Catherine and Charles in their New York apartment for a free-flowing discussion that touches on family history, the immigrant experience, and the meaning of Italian American identity. Via the Criterion Channel app. 21 July. With Michal.
  7. The Color of Money. Directed by Martin Scorsese. 1986. United States. Purchased via iTunes and watched via the movies app. 21 July. With Michal.

  10. Another Year. Directed by Mike Leigh. 2010. United Kingdom. Mike Leigh traces four seasons in the lives of a contented, happily married couple and the troubled, significantly less stable friends and family who surround them. Extracting wonderfully nuanced, lived-in performances from his remarkable ensemble cast in particular a scene-stealing Lesley Manville as the lonely hard-drinking divorcee who yearns for a relationship Leigh crafts a generous bittersweet look at the ebbs and flows of everyday life. Via the Criterion Channel app. 26 July.
  11. Frontline: United States of Conspiracy. How conspiracy theories went from the fringes of U.S. Politics inot the White House. Via the PBS app. With Monika. 28 July.
  12. Unorthodox. 2020. United States. 4 part limited series. Via the Netflix app. 31 July.
