- But I’m A Cheerleader. Directed by Jamie Babbit. 1999. United States. Starring Natasha Lyonne, Clea DuVall, Melanie Lynskey, Cathy Moriarty. One of the definitive queer classics of the late nineties, this cult favorite balances hilariously campy satire with sweet romantic comedy. Natasha Lyonne stars as Megan Bloomfield, a bubbly all-American high school cheerleader who fantasizes about her fellow squad mates but doesn’t believe she could possibly be a lesbian. When her parents stage an interviention and send her to True Directions, a conversion therapy camp run by the terrifying Mary Brown (Cathy Moriarty), Megan paradoxically discovers her true self. Employing deliberately kitschy production design influenced by John Waters, director Jamie Babbit crafts a subversive send-up of traditional gender stereotypes that, while largely overlooked on its release, now seems positively ahead of its time. Via the Criterion Channel app. 22 June.
- The Irishman. Via the Netflix app. With Michal. 23 June.
- Mean Streets. Directed by Martin Scorsese. United States. 1973. Starring Harvery Keitel, Robert DeNiro. Purchased from iTunes. 25 June.
