A Moment of Delight: Tananarive Due’s Story “The Lake”

Yesterday I had a brief conversation online with someone about the idea of finding a moment of joy or delight in your day. Ross Gay wrote an entire book of essays — actually more than one book — called The Book of Delights in which he looked for a moment of joy everyday for a year and wrote a brief essay shortly after that moment. Gay’s book also inspired the radio show This American Life to do an entire show on that theme of delight; my favorite episode was one where a young child is excited to ride the bus to school for the first time in his life.

The moment of delight I experienced recently was when I finished the first story in Tananarive Due’s book Ghost Stories called “The Lake.” The story is a story written from the perspective of the monster. I did not predict how the story would end, so when I finished I thought to myself, wow, that was a clever story.

QOTD: What was a recent moment of delight or something that brought a smile to your face?
