Recent Reading: My Brilliant Friend
I first read Elena Ferrante's My Brilliant Friend about five years ago, so this was a re-read. I decided to re-read the first book in the Neapolitan Tetralogy because the New York Times is having a group discussion about the text for their August book club.
A few things struck me while reading the text this time.
- Many of the sentences are short and simple.
- While there is some dialogue, compared to, say Ray Bradbury's stories, there is not a lot.
- Naples is, perhaps, the most dangerous city in Europe. The threat of violence often looms large.
Have you read this book? What was your opinion?
