Current Reading: The Propheteers

 

Consider reading Max Apple. I am currently reading his 1987 novel The Propheteers. 

Here is what Michiko Kakutani said of Apple when the book was published:

Max Apple's latest novel, ''The Propheteers,'' sets out to create a similarly mythic portrait of this nation - and it also mixes real people with wholly invented events in a funny, postmodern brew of slapstick farce - but like the author's earlier works, its animating impulse is not rage but amused reverence, its dominant tone tender nostalgia rather than indignance or disgust. The result is a sort of children's cartoon, artfully outlined with sharp brushstrokes, then inked-in in bright, primary colors.
